Opera: The man at the piano

L/V producties & Stichting Cimuth

The Man at The Piano is a chamber opera for piano, tenor and baritone. It is based on the life of the jazz pianist Bud Powell and his friend Francis Paudras, and the relationship between them. On stage we see two men and a piano. One is a brilliant pianist, the other a singer who is completely overshadowed by the pianist. They give a performance together and also talk about the ordinary things in life from their own individual points of view. They keep each other in balance, but the tragedy of the man and his piano gradually comes to light. Musically brilliant, but a psychological wreck. As always, he plays his repertoire, but tonight the piano takes over and plays some new music. Van Brugge's composition tacks between jazz, film music, contemporary classical and improvisation. The contrast between the strict adherence to the written music and room for personal interpretation is an important element throughout.
