John Giorno's work has changed the way the world views poetry. An innovator of Performance Poetry, John Giorno elevated Spoken Word to a high Art Form, and is one of the influential figures of 20th century poetry.
The Giorno Poetry System label (1965) focused on the innovative use of new technologies. Being a close friend and confidant of Andy Warhol, he was the subject of Warhol's first film, "Sleep”. As one of the leading lights of the New York Beat generation, he devised the legendary event at the Museum of Modern Art in 1970, during which different poems could be listened to every day on answering machines. The Giorno Poetry System label has released over fifty LPs and CDs of poets working with performance and music, such as Laurie Anderson.
